Introduction to Movement Literacy for Elderly

(For All NROC Coaches)


Strength, balance and flexibility are integral components in falls prevention for the elderly. Falls in elderly are a leading cause of mortality. This course looks at the individual exercises and planning to enable instructors to plan and execute exercises to benefit the elderly as well as improve their own individual ability for postural correction. Designing a training programme for the elderly enables the instructor to progress and regress the difficulty level of exercises to suit the individual needs of the client.

This workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Strength, Balance and Flexibility (SBF)
  • Strength-related exercises
  • Balance-related exercises
  • Flexibility-related exercises
  • Planning and progression

The desired outcomes of this workshop are:

  • Participants to be competent in translating knowledge through the applicant / development of a physical activity programme
  • Participants to be able to communicate the importance of Strength, Balance and Flexibility (SBF) and be an advocate of developing movement in seniors
  • Participants to note simple assessment to understand seniors’ physical ability to perform exercises

About the Presenter

This workshop will be facilitated by Mr Zhen Wei. Zhen Wei has 5 years of teaching experience at secondary school level as an MOE PE teacher. He is currently spearheading several Health Promotion Board (HPB) projects that incorporates fitness activities in both youth and elderly populations.
