SpexBusiness Network at the SEA Games

Borneo Motors Supporting SEA Games

Managers and staff from Borneo Motors turned out at Kallang Softball Field to support their employees Cerigwen Ng and Lina Goh, who won a bronze medal for Women’s Softball.

A strong show of support from the spexBusiness Network continued at the 28th SEA Games as 17 athlete-employees from partner companies accounted for medals of all colours from 12 different sports. From Netball’s sweet victory over Malaysia to Derek Wong’s hard-fought Badminton bronze, the athletes had their employers to thank for their contributions to their medal haul.

Among the 17 athlete-employees across 5 network partners were 3 Floorball players, who found that the support they received from Deloitte Singapore and KPMG was invaluable in helping them clinch the gold medal.

“Deloitte has provided athletes like me great support such as providing paid leave when we need to go for competitions as well as being understanding towards our packed training schedules”’ said Floorball Gold Medallist Joscelin Kee. Her teammate, Wynne Tang, added, “The support system for floorball is not well-established, hence it is often a struggle for us players to cope. It is liberating that Deloitte does not discriminate by sport but instead recognises athletes based on their passion and commitment.”

Beyond the flexibility shown, several companies went the extra mile to support their athlete-employees during the Games. Softballers Cerigwen Ng and Lina Goh were heartened to see their colleagues from Borneo Motors Singapore supporting them at the Kallang Softball Field with a banner.

“They took the effort to understand the game and also sent us words of encouragement throughout the Games”said Cerigwen Ng, who won a bronze medal with the women’s team.

For Borneo Motors, sport embodies their core value of ‘Winning Together’, so support for their athletes is important to them.”” It is in our DNA to enable our people to work together successfully and so we naturally gave our strongest support to our Team Singapore athletes at work and when they played at the SEA Games,” said Senior Human Resources Manager Jasmine Tan

MSIG Insurance was another network partner who  wasexcited to cheer for their employee, Silver Medallist Judoka Ang Xuan Yi, during the Games. “Cheering for our colleagues bonds our people together,” said MSIG Deputy CEO Chan Tar Seng.“Sharing the joy of many Singaporeans, we are indeed very delighted to see her clinch the Silver medal amidst a very strong field of judokas.”

Although not all spexBusiness Network partners currently have athlete-employees, several of them came on board to support Team Singapore through other initiatives.

OSIM and Sports Link contributed generously to the Premier Lounge, helping to provide Team Singapore athletes with an exclusive space to relax and recover during the Games. Deputy CEO of Sports Link, Teddy Lin, explained, ‘As a home-grown Singapore sports retailer, we wanted to show our care and support to our fellow national athletes who have trained so hard to bring glory to our nation.’

‘We are honoured by SSI's invitation to equip the Premier Lounge with our products and create a space where people can relax their bodies and minds,’ said OSIM Manager Pek Wan Juan. ‘As far as we are concerned, it is definitely all about the athletes and the team behind them.

Meanwhile, Sakae Holdings jumped at the chance to come on board for the Champions’ Café initiative, which honoured athletes for their hard work at the close of their competition.

Said Janet Lin, Assistant Manager at Sakae Holdings, ‘We are very honoured to be part of the SEA Games! It has warmed our hearts to see the hard effort our athletes put in to win medals for Singapore. Coming on board to support them is the least we can do.’
