Use of foot orthotics in the treatment of injuries and chronic conditions affecting athletes

Foot orthotics have been prescribed by medical professionals to treat a variety of injuries and chronic conditions affecting athletes. An overall patient-satisfaction rate of 70%-80% for these devices has been reported in medical literature (Ritchie, 2007). However, there is much confusion as to when to use orthoses and what orthotics can and can’t do. This can be due to combination of incomplete understanding of the role of orthotics in patient management, incorrect orthotic usage and misconceptions of the benefits of orthotics that may be propagated by more commercial enterprises. This talk hopes to introduce the correct usage of orthotics in the multi-disciplinary team approach, outline the different types of orthotics available, and the objective benefits of orthotics in management of an athlete
