Presentation Title: Effects of Ramadan Fasting on Athlete Performance – Recommendations for Training
Synopsis: Fasting Muslim athletes who train and compete during Ramadan face challenges to perform at their optimum level due to the restrictions of food / fluids and alterations to sleep patterns. This presentation looks at the application of the FITT (frequency, intensity, time and type) principle in the modification of training, nutrition and hydration. In addition, the presentation will provide a number of key recommendations for coaches and student-athletes to help reduce the negative impact of fasting when training during Ramadan.
Short Biography: Rashid has been with the SSI for over 15 years and has worked with a wide range of sports, including football, sailing, silat, softball, sepak takraw, and table tennis. He was also the fitness coach for Team Singapore badminton ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Rashid has a degree in Physical Education from the University of Alberta, Canada, and is currently completing a PhD from the National Institute of Education (NIE), where his research specialisation is the effects of Ramadan on athlete performance.
