Dr Ric Charlesworth

Dr Ric Charlesworth

Ric Charlesworth is a doctor of medicine with an honorary Science degree and an Arts degree majoring in philosophy and history. He is a former captain of the Australian Hockey Team and the Western Australian State Hockey Team and Cricket Team. He played hockey for Australia for a record 17 years and played first class cricket for nearly a decade.

He was elected a member of Federal parliament in 1983 and retired 10 years later. His plans to pursue medicine were diverted when he took on the position of National Coach of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team from 1993 to 2000. Between 2009 and 2014 he coached the Men’s team.

In four World Cups and three Olympic Games as coach of Australia, Charlesworth’s teams won Gold on 6 occasions and once won bronze. They won 8 of 9 Champions Trophy tournaments and 2 Commonwealth Games Gold medals… this is a record never equalled in the sport. Between 1994 and 2014 Charlesworth was ‘Coach of the Year’ 8 times!

Dr Chow Jiayi

Jia Yi graduated from the School of Physical Education (SPE) with Honours in 1999 and was awarded the Gold medal from Singapore Sports Council for being the top Honours student in Physical Education. He subsequently taught for a few years in a Singapore school before returning to Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS) as a lecturer. Jia Yi undertook further postgraduate study and obtained his PhD in the area of Motor Control and Learning with the University of Otago, New Zealand from an Overseas Graduate Scholarship (OGS) awarded by NIE. His research interests includes examining multi-articular coordination from a Dynamical Systems Theoretical perspective, visual perception in sports expertise and in a pedagogical approach (Nonlinear Pedagogy) where key pedagogical principles underpinned by representative learning design, manipulation of task constraints, functional variability, relevant focus of attention and perception-action couplings can support nonlinearity in learning.

Jia Yi is currently the Associate Dean, Programme & Student Development with the Office of Teacher Education (OTE).

Vern Gambetta

Vern Gambetta

Vern Gambetta is currently the director of Gambetta Sports Training Systems. He was also one of the founders and the first director of the USA Track and Field Coaching Education programme. He is recognized internationally as an expert in training and conditioning in sport and has lectured extensively and conducted clinics in Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe.
