SG-Coach Level 1 Theory Programme
Sport Singapore’s Singapore Coach Excellence (SG-Coach) Programme is an enhanced training and development pathway for all sports coaches in the community, clubs or high performance sport programmes. The aim is to establish a training and development system to develop high quality and professional coaches. The SG-Coach Programme replaces the National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) since 27 March 2015. Holders of NCAP Theory Certificates will not be required to attend the SG-Coach Level 1 Theory Prograrmme.
Acquiring the SG-Coach Programme certification is also the first step towards being a professional coach registered with the National Registry of Coaches (NROC).
Why is SG-Coach Level 1 Theory Programme important and what is it about?
Are you interested in coaching sports? The SG-Coach Programme aims to prepare aspiring coaches with the knowledge and skills of 'how to coach' and guide one to understand 'why you coach' through the introduction of values education and principles in sports within the local ecosystem. The course contents include theories which are supported by evidence-based research and practical approaches for coaches to apply their learning on the field.
It covers the following modules:
- Values and Principles in Sport (VPS)
- Sports Development System
- Communication and Relationship Building
- Delivery Methods
- Risk Management
Through this course, you will have the opportunity to examine your own coaching philosophy, learn how to incorporate teaching of values through sports coaching and understand the basic theories and skills of sports coaching.
Minimum age of 18 years old.
The course will be delivered through a series of theory and practical sessions where course participants are expected to participate actively through listening, discussion and demonstration. The course and assessment will be conducted in English and it is recommended, although not required, that participants possess a credit in the English Language at the GCE “O” / “N” Levels or Employability Skills System (ESS) of Level 5.
Participants must meet the required attendance of 80% for lessons (at least 12 out of 14 lessons) to be eligible to sit for the written assessment.
Participants who score a minimum of 70 out of 100 multiple-choice questions will be issued with a Certificate of Achievement. Those who do not meet the minimum score of 70, will be able to sit for a re-assessment.

SG-Coach Level 1 Theory Waiver/Accreditation
Holders of relevant coaching or physical education qualifications may seek waiver/accreditation for the SG-Coach Level 1 Theory Programme.

Sport Singapore is currently reviewing the contents of SG-Coach Level 2 and 3 Theory courses and details will be advised at a later date.
