Creating an Inclusive (Swimming) Learning Environment

Description

Creating an inclusive (swimming) learning environment is an important coaching aspect in today’s swim coaching practices. The aim of this course is to help the participants to gain better self-awareness of their current swim coaching practices and how to coach better by shifting their attitudes in developing a safe and trusted relationship with learners through deeper understanding of their diverse learning needs.

The practical session (wet session) in this course is structured to allow participants to try out their lesson plan with their fellow participants which will be guided by facilitator and reviewed by peers. Through the practical session, participants will learn how to handle learners with diverse learning needs when they are transiting into the swimming environment in a safe and secured manner.

  • Understanding inclusion and the application of TREE model in adaption
  • Understanding the importance of communication and connection in social-emotional needs
  • Creating and conducting physical activities through structured learning methodology
  • Engaging participants through active reflective to deepen their understanding on the “why” behind the intended learning objectives within the sport / task
  • Basic handling of learners with special needs in a swimming pool setting

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the TREE model to create an inclusive lesson plan
  • Realise the importance of clear and concise instruction with counter checking of understanding of individual learners
  • Design a structured learning format within the daily lesson plans
  • Acquire basic knowledge of handling learners with special needs in a swimming pool

Entry Requirement

Participants will be awarded the Certificate of Attendance by Republic Polytechnic upon meeting 75% of the attendance requirement. 

About the Presenter

Mr Danny Ong is certified International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Para-Sport Educator. He is an accredited swimming coach within the Singapore National Registry of Coaches (NROC). A Master Trainer / Coach Developer for Sport Singapore, ActiveSG, SwimSafer Programme. In addition, he is the Principal of AquaFins. The only adaptive swim school in Singapore with the early intervention (aquatic) programme endorsed by National Council of Social Service (NCSS).
