Strength Training for Inclusive Fitness using HUR Activ8

(For All NROC Coaches)

Elderly people and persons with disabilities require long term exercise to keep healthy like any other individuals. One cheap and sustainable way is to hit the gym nearby the estate which is included in the Vision 2030 drawn up by the Sport Singapore and is also part of the Disability Sports Master Plan. However, many have reservations about going to public gyms for workout due to accessibility to the seemingly sophisticated equipment. Some wheelchair users have difficulties getting onto the machines; others with medical condition do not know what the safety limits are; some may sustain injuries from incorrect usage of the equipment.

Trainers routinely go through training on operating exercise machines. However, they often face difficulties helping elderly or persons with disabilities (PWDs) to proper equipment access for the fear of causing harm or injuries. This could be due to the lack of appropriate knowledge approach to prescribing gym exercises for special conditions (e.g. disabilities) and the lack of manual handling skills to helping elderly or PWDs in getting onto a machine. This is understandable as most trainers are not medically trained and therefore may not know the precautions and contraindications for certain medical or health conditions.

With the increased availability of user-friendly HUR equipment and cloud-based software that allows data collection and automated reporting, this course will harness fitness professionals with relevant knowledge and skills to create evidence-based training programs for elderly and PWDs using HUR Activ8 strength training concepts. The course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to confidently prescribe resistance training to elderly and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the HUR System and the HUR SmartTouch and Kiosk software
  • Learn to develop and manage personalized HUR SmartTouch programs
  • Gain knowledge on various conditions and skills needed to assist elderly and PWDs
  • Increase confidence on applying the skills via hands on practical session and guided exercise prescription
  • Apply safety concerns and proper techniques for strength training with elderly and PWDs
  • Plan fitness assessments and exercise program monitoring for elderly and PWDs
