This lecture is Part 2 of the 3-parts 11th E.W. Barker professorship lecture series.

This keynote will be delivered in 3 parts, encouraging us to consider throughout the keynote how school physical education curricula can be legitimised in ways other than solely reliant on a health or physical activity discourse. Part 1 will present an overview of differing trends across a number of continents that are evident in the teaching of school physical education. This includes 'health and physical education', 'well-being' and 'comprehensive school physical activity’. Part 2 will focus on the similarities and differences between the general aims of physical education across jurisdictions will then be shared, noting that there is a definitive number and foci of aims for school physical education that are shared internationally. Part 3 will share physical education in the primary and post-primary school curriculum in (Republic of) Ireland to illustrate the enactment of complementary range of philosophies and aims for school physical education.

About the Presenter

This lecture will be delivered by Professor Ann MacPhail (Head of Department (Physical Education and Sport Sciences), Limerick University). Prior to joining the department, Professor MacPhail was a Research Associate at Loughborough University for over 3 years. She has a B.Ed (Honours) Physical Education Degree from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh and a Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow. Professor MacPhail is External Examiner for the PGCE Secondary (Physical Education) programme at the University of Chichester, UK, the MA Physical Education at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and External Examiner within the School of Sports, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, UK. Professor MacPhail is Associate Editor for the journal Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy and a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Professor MacPhail is also Associate Editor Revista Pedagogica ADAL / ADAL Pedagogy Journal.
