Title

Creating an Inclusive (Swimming) Learning Environment

(Swim coaches with valid and current swim coaching license (e.g. NROC, AUSTSWIM or equivalent))

Description

Teaching and coaching landscape has changed rapidly in recent years.  Many find it challenging when handling learners with special needs or with a disability.  Increasingly, more and younger learners are diagnosed with invisible disabilities such as Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyspraxia and others.  Such atypical learners look like any neurotypical learners.  However, when one uses conventional coaching methods, it does not seem to work that effectively.  When that happened, it frustrated both parties – the coach and the learner.

Creating an inclusive (swimming) learning environment is an important coaching aspect in today’s swim coaching practices. The aim of this course is to help the participants to gain better self-awareness of their current swim coaching practices and how to coach better by shifting their attitudes in developing a safe and trusted relationship with learners through deeper understanding of their diverse learning needs.

The practical session (wet session) in this course is structured to allow participants to try out their lesson plan with their fellow participants which will be guided by facilitator and reviewed by peers. Through the practical session, participants will learn how to handle learners with diverse learning needs when they are transiting into the swimming environment in a safe and secured manner.

Key Highlights:

  • Understanding inclusion and the application of TREE model in adaption
  • Understanding the importance of communication and connection in social-emotional needs
  • Creating and conducting physical activities through structured learning methodology
  • Engaging participants through active reflective to deepen their understanding on the “why” behind the intended learning objectives within the sport / task

  • Design a structured learning format within the daily lesson plans
