Sleep Science for Sports Coaches

(For All NROC Coaches)


Sleep is not just an important element of quality life but also in quality sports performance. At this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand how good and poor quality sleep enhance and inhibit sporting performance respectively
  2. Understand the scientific principles behind sleep
  3. Help athletes develop good sleeping strategies and habits

About the Presenter


Dr. Richard Swinbourne (Ricco) is a New Zealand trained dietitian through the University of Otago, and completed his Sport Dietitian course with Sport Dietitians Australia. Ricco worked with the New Zealand Rugby Union as their High Performance Nutritionist for National Teams between 2007 to 2014, including service delivery with All Black teams. 7 years ago, Ricco stepped sideways to explore the world of sleep among elite collision sport athletes, enrolling for a Ph.D. with Auckland University of Technology. Ricco’s work was published in the European Journal of Sports Science in December 2015, titled “Prevalence of Poor Sleep Quality, Sleepiness and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Athletes’. Ricco is currently the Team Lead of Sport Nutrition at the Singapore Sport Institute (SSI), and is enjoying applying both his nutrition and sleep knowledge to our elite environment here in Singapore.
